You may be high potential now but will you stay the course?

The desire to make your mark and show what you’re made of is a powerful driver. One that can both propel you forward as well as breed the kind of restless impatience that drives the wrong behaviours. Behaviours that mean you are seen as overly competitive, arrogant, a non-team player and difficult to manage.

This is not what people are looking for in their next manager, their next leader – the people that will take their organisation forward. These behaviours scare them, annoy them, and frustrate them but most of all they don’t know what to do with them.

Recognising that life isn’t a smash and grab could be one of the best things you ever do.

What this requires is a paradigm shift. A shift from seeing success in terms of power and acquisition to seeing it in its broader sense. Seeing that true success is living a purposeful and fulfilling life, whatever that means for you. With this in mind, there are some key things you need to focus on:

  • Really get to know yourself. We mean really, fully, deeply. In any given circumstance, how do you react? Is that how you want to react? What drives you, fulfils you, energises you, strengthens you? How do you show up? Until you start answering these fundamental questions, you will be a victim of what comes your way, rather than the master.
  • Get great at getting better. If you’re serious about your success, be serious about learning. Ask for feedback, and give yourself feedback, constantly. And be open to hearing it.
  • Truly value people. Work with them, help them get better. Recognise that true success is not dependent on being better than others. It is dependent on being the best you can be and working with others in an authentic, respectful, trustworthy way.

Do this and all that brilliant potential will get you exactly where you want to go.
