AI vs Human Leaders – who do people trust?

87% of employees think AI algorithms give fairer feedback than their leaders.

That’s according to a 2024 Gartner survey of nearly 3,500 employees. It speaks volumes: people often believe a machine can judge them more fairly than their own boss. Another study by the World Economic Health Forum found that 68% of people would rather speak to a robot than their manager about stress and anxiety.

What do these stats tell you?

It’s a signal that connection has thinned and trust is eroding, and people are seeking a neutral, judgement-free outlet – even if that outlet is artificial.

  • Psychological safety is fraying – people feel they can’t speak safely to their leaders
  • Connection is paper-thin – human bonds are weakening, especially under pressure
  • Convenience isn’t enough – when the choice favours a robot, we’ve failed as leaders

Some might see this as an opportunity to roll out AI chatbots and coaches – throw more tech at the problem.

We see it a different way: We need more humanness.

Human-first leadership shouldn’t be a thing of the past

At Ivy House, we believe that while AI can mimic a safe space, it cannot create it. Only humans can nurture real connection, empathy, and trust – especially when stakes are highest.

Here are the core human skills we develop – ones that no AI can replicate:

  • Emotional intelligence – picking up on what’s unsaid, and responding with empathy and integrity
  • Courageous conversations – having the integrity to hold hard conversations — and the care to hold them well
  • Creating psychological safety – so teams speak up before things go wrong
  • Giving – and receiving – effective feedback – making people feel truly seen and heard
  • Fostering genuine relationships – relationships built on real connection, that feel rewarding

Let’s build leaders who lead like humans

AI can listen without judgement. It can run through thousands of conversation scenarios without fatigue. It can even give feedback in real-time.

But there’s one thing it will never do: look you in the eye, sense what’s unspoken, and have the courage to challenge you in the moment.

That’s the work of a great coach — and it’s the core of every Ivy House programme.

Our coaches are some of the most experienced leadership and performance coaches in the country. They combine deep behavioural expertise with the courage to hold up a mirror, the skill to create psychological safety, and the empathy to meet people exactly where they are. This is what turns leadership theory into lasting behavioural change.

Every session is live, personal and contextual. Our coaches are not just delivering a curriculum; they’re reading the room, sensing resistance, spotting potential and adapting in the moment. AI can’t pick up on the flicker of self-doubt before someone speaks, or notice when silence means “I don’t feel safe.” Our coaches can — and they respond instantly, turning those moments into breakthroughs.

This is why our programmes consistently deliver results that go beyond skills acquisition alone. Leaders leave not just knowing what to do, but having practised it until the fear is gone. They leave with greater clarity, deeper accountability, and the confidence to lead with humanity — the kind of leadership that builds trust in every interaction.

While AI may expose the trust gap, it will take human leaders to close it. And that’s exactly who we develop.

Making tech feel human

At Ivy House, we’re in the business of human leadership. That doesn’t mean that we don’t incorporate tech into our programmes. In fact, it plays a vital role – but it’s not the star of the show. For us, the most effective technology is the kind that works quietly in the background, amplifying the impact without ever distracting from what truly matters: the humans.

This means weaving it into our programmes in a way that feels natural, purposeful, and entirely supportive of a personal and impactful experience.

  • Digital and on-demand: Participants can easily access essential materials anytime, anywhere, ensuring they arrive prepared and ready to dive in. It’s practical, sustainable and essential for an easy learning experience.
  • Virtual rooms that feel real: So many virtual training rooms create disconnection, boredom and half-baked results. Our tech team and facilitators are experts in creating virtual rooms where delegates feel fully included and supported, can easily build relationships with one another, and are given many opportunities to challenge and stretch themselves. It’s a fully immersive experience that feels seamless.
  • Alt 360 feedback tools: Due to the transformative nature of the development, delegates will have the skills and the courage to give and receive highly valuable and specific feedback to aid high-performance. This is necessary for both individual development and for building safe and open feedback cultures within organisations – using practical, virtual tools.
  • Virtual coaching sessions: Whether 1:1 or in small groups, these sessions are designed to provide tailored guidance and support, helping individuals address real-life challenges in real-time from wherever they are located. Our coaches are expert at building trust-based relationships virtually, just as they would in person, meaning the coaching conversations are insightful, comfortable and transformational.

One truth about AI

You can’t fake trust. You can’t shortcut empathy. You can’t automate psychological safety.

Investing in development that upskills leaders to lead like a human can rebuild it. That is future-fit leadership.
