FOR HR & L&D LEADERS

Practical leadership models and diagrams
This collection brings together some of the frameworks we use in our leadership and talent development work – from mindset models and behaviour change tools to team effectiveness frameworks.
They’re all rooted in the belief that great leadership starts with being human – building self-awareness, shifting behaviour, and creating deeper connections. Whether you’re designing a programme, coaching leaders or just looking for practical inspiration, these are the tools we’ve seen make the biggest difference.

Human leadership
The human leadership model
Leadership development only creates lasting impact when it works from the inside out. Our human leadership approach connects personal leadership identity to measurable organisational performance – through mindset, behaviour and environment.

Aligning to your core: The foundation of authentic leadership
Great leadership starts with knowing yourself. There are six core elements every leader needs to be aligned with: purpose, driving forces, values, beliefs, element and purpose —in order to lead from a place of strength.
When you understand what drives you, and you’re clear on your personal foundations, you can take full ownership of how you show up. That’s what helps leaders lead with impact, authenticity, and confidence—especially in high-pressure moments.

The three foundations of authentic leadership
To become an authentic, effective leader, you need three things: self-knowledge, self-empowerment, and self-leadership. Know who you are, believe in your ability to change, and take ownership of how you show up.
These aren’t just human leadership skills—they’re life skills. And they’re the foundation of real, sustainable change.

7 types of rest every leader needs for sustainable wellbeing
Rest isn’t just about sleep. To lead well, you need different kinds of rest—physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social and spiritual.
When leaders don’t get the right kind of rest, they burn out or show up half-present. Prioritising your wellbeing isn’t a luxury—it’s essential for resilience, clarity and performance. Here are the 7 types of rest every leader (and person) needs.

You are not your thoughts: A mindset shift for conscious leadership
Just because you think something doesn’t mean it’s true—or that you have to act on it. That is not what it means to be an authentic leader.
You are not your thoughts. When you create space between who you are and what you think, you get to choose your response instead of reacting on autopilot. That’s where conscious, authentic leadership begins.

Leadership behaviour
Taking accountability for behaviour
You can’t always control what happens—but you can always choose how you respond. That’s the idea behind event + behaviour = result.
In leadership and life, your behaviour in response to any event directly shapes the outcome. This simple but powerful equation puts responsibility back in your hands. It’s a mindset shift that encourages ownership, emotional intelligence, and conscious choice—especially in challenging situations.
It’s one of the core principles we use in leadership development to help individuals take control of their impact.

Stretch zone model: How leaders grow beyond their comfort zone
Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone—it happens just outside it.
Too often, fear, anger, pride or apathy can hold us back—but if we push through the resistance, we enter the stretch zone where learning, change and real leadership development happen.
It’s a powerful mindset reminder for anyone ready to step up and grow.

The behaviour gap
There’s often a gap between what you want—and what you’re actually doing to get it.
That gap is all about behaviour. Results don’t come from intentions alone—they come from the consistent actions you take. When behaviour aligns with goals, change happens. When it doesn’t, progress stalls.
It’s a powerful mindset for leaders ready to take ownership and drive real results.

Human leadership: The foundation of high performance
You can train someone to code, negotiate or perform surgery—but without strong human foundations, their leadership won’t stand.
Confidence, resilience, emotional intelligence, self-leadership—these are the skills that hold everything else up. Human leadership isn’t a ‘nice to have’, it’s the base layer for success in any role, at any level.
Want better leaders? Start here.

The ownership ladder: Shifting from victim to accountable leadership
Everyone operates somewhere on the ladder.
At the bottom? Victim behaviour—blame, excuses, inaction. At the top? Accountable, proactive leadership that drives change.
The ownership ladder helps leaders spot where they are and choose to climb. Because when people shift from things happen to me to things happen because of me, everything changes. Leadership gets braver, teams get bolder, and results get real.

Relationships and conversations
The ABC model for effective leadership relationships
The ABC model is a go-to tool for building better leadership relationships. It breaks things down into three simple parts:
- Aspiration & Agreements – Are we aligned on where we’re going and what we expect from each other?
- Beliefs & Behaviours – What do we believe, and how does that shape how we show up?
- Communication & Conversations – Are we having the honest, open chats that build trust?
It’s a powerful framework used in leadership and talent development to improve communication, build trust, and create stronger, high-performing teams.

How to give effective feedback
The IBIC model is a simple tool for giving clear, impactful feedback.
It breaks feedback into four parts: Intent, Behaviour, Impact, and Change. It helps you move past vague statements and into specific, actionable conversations—so people know exactly what worked, what didn’t, and what to do differently.

Behaviour drives relationships: The leadership choice you always have
Relationships aren’t built on intention—they’re built on behaviour. And the good news? You always get to choose yours.
In any interaction, it’s your behaviour that creates trust, connection, or conflict. This idea is key to leadership development: if you want stronger relationships, start by taking ownership of how you show up.

Real listening: The leadership skill that changes everything
Most people think they’re listening—but they’re not.
They’re pretending. Or just catching the words. Real listening means going deeper—tuning into what’s not being said, picking up on emotion, body language, and energy. That’s where trust is built and real understanding happens.
It’s one of the most underrated leadership skills—and one of the most powerful.

Motivated by learning vs motivated by being right
Every conversation is shaped by what’s driving us underneath. When leaders are motivated by learning, they stay open—sharing honestly, listening fully, and being willing to change our minds. But when they’re motivated by being right, they protect, perform, and push back.
This difference in mindset shapes how we lead, how we build relationships, and ultimately, the culture we create. The best leaders know which one they’re choosing—and what it costs when they don’t. So, using the model shown opposite, do you spend more time above the line, or below it?

Teams, meetings and projects
Team effectiveness framework for high-performing leadership teams
Strong teams don’t just happen—they’re built through clarity and conversation.
This framework helps teams get clear on five key areas: purpose, ways of working, stakeholders, relationships, and the mindset & conversations at the centre of it all. It’s a practical tool for improving alignment, building trust, and driving performance.
Used in leadership and team development, it’s all about creating the conditions for teams to thrive.

Project management: Why planning beats speed in leadership
There are two ways to run a project.
One is to dive in, make decisions fast, and hope it all works out. You move quickly—but often end up off course. The other? Slow down at the start, take time to plan, and execute with clarity. It feels slower, but it gets you where you actually want to go.
Great leadership means choosing intention over chaos—especially under pressure.

How to run effective meetings
Most meetings fail because people skip straight to the content. The PPCCR model flips that.
Start with Purpose, then get clear on Process, before diving into Content. End with Commitment and Review. This structure keeps meetings focused, productive and action-oriented.
It’s a practical tool for leaders who want to stop wasting time—and start running meetings that actually work.

Leading through change
Personal change
When you want to make a change, the first step is to know it. Understand the situation as it currently is, and what the triggers are for your behaviour. The second step is to see it – visualise what you want and what the change will look like. Next, you need to voice it out loud – to yourself and others. And finally, you need to commit to doing it. You need to practise; whatever change you want to create, you need to do it over and over again, until it becomes habit.

The House of Change
Think of it as a house with many rooms – each one representing a different stage of the change process. There’s no ‘easy route’ or secret tunnel to skip ahead. Real change? It demands that we step into each room and sit with what we find there. You might start in the room of denial, where things feel surreal or you’re pretending the change isn’t happening. Then maybe you descend into the pit of paralysis, where everything feels overwhelming and motivation disappears. From there, it’s possible to stumble into confusion and chaos – the room where nothing makes sense and you’re questioning everything. And just when you feel like you’ve made progress in the room of renewal, bam! You’re suddenly back in the basement of despair.

The Change Curve
You’re probably familiar with this one. The Change Curve is a simple, powerful way to make sense of how people respond to change on a human level. It helps us understand how people typically move through change, from initial shock and resistance to eventual acceptance and growth. It reminds us that emotional responses aren’t a problem to fix, but part of the process. When we combine this insight with the right support, we give people the tools to move through uncertainty, adapt with confidence and come out stronger on the other side.
